I finally decided to update the Mac OS from 10.6.8 (missing 10.7 - Lion). The upgrade is cheap, downloadable, and easy to install. Gone are the nail-biting days of OS upgrades. Of course, one or two applications now need to be upgraded too.
The new Safari (version 6) has no Activity window so I had to search for a new way to download Youtube videos. The plugin at Vertical Forest is the answer: once installed you just click on the information "i" at the top-right of the video screen, then right-click (control-click) on the resolution you want, and select 'download linked file' from the menu.
